Congratulations to Marian Quinn for winning the Witches and Pumpkins.

I had mentioned during the meeting that we would have turkey tracks for this BOM. However since it required making four of them to make a whole block, I am concerned that it will overwhelm some of our members. I decided to make something that can be done faster: a Christmas stockings.

The finished block should be 9.5 inches long and 7.5 inches wide. All stockings should have some muslin or off white cotton and fabrics with dominant colors of green, red or gold. There are 3 main pieces: The background A which is one piece of fabric 9.5x7.5 inches, the top of the stocking B, the body of the stocking C. D is a label to write a name. One of the 3 main pieces (A, B or C) should be muslin or off white fabric.

To build the stocking: cut one rectangle of fabric slightly larger than the top B, another rectangle of fabric, slightly larger than the bottom C.

Sew the two pieces together. If the top is of a dark color, appliqué the strip D using your favorite technique, to make a label. Do not write anything on the label. Make a hem at the top of piece B turning toward the wrong side and make sure that the distance between the top and bottom of piece B is the same as the template.

Cut a piece of fabric slightly larger than the whole stocking. Make a hem at the top of that piece.

Put that piece and the sewn stocking piece right side together with both hems on top.

Cut out the paper template, and with the heel of the stocking on the left, pin it on top of the two layers, on the 2 pieces side (not on the one piece side), making sure that the junction of the template between B and C is on the seam between your  B and C fabric. Trace around the template with a marking tool that you can see. Remove the template and sew on the line that you just traced making sure that you leave the top open.

Cut out the fabric about a quarter inch away from the seam. Turn it inside out. As usual you can decorate any way you wish. Fix the stocking to the background anyway you like at the center of block A, about three quarter inch from the top. Here are some suggestions: Make a small hole where the black dot on the template is and pass embroidery floss that you sew. You can saw along the top edge making sure that you do not close the top. You can attach it with a button.

If this is not clear, I will have some samples during the Hand-on-Meetings on October 12.
