    President's Message

    Dear Quilting Friends,

On November 9th, our beautiful queen-size raffle quilt found a new home, and our guild treasury grew accordingly, enabling us to fund a number of important initiatives for our guild. Not only will we add outside lecturers and workshop leaders to our calendar in 2007, but we’ll also develop new tools and events for attracting new members,
creating comfort quilts for needy individuals in our community, and having even more fun quilting together.

Fun IS the agenda, in fact, at our January 10th potluck meeting (see inside for full details). Guests are welcome, a dish to share being the “price of admission.” So bring along a friend—any age, any sewing ability—to join our festivities.

We want our guild to grow, so inviting friends is key. At its last meeting, your executive board voted to make that easier by adding a new benefit to guild membership.

At the January meeting, members will receive their guild directory and something new—a guest pass. This handy card, which will be provided to anyone who pays for guild membership, has basic info about our purpose and activities. It entitles the bearer to a one-time waiver of the usual $5 guest admission fee. So come get your directory and give your guest pass to someone soon!

A special guild-wide event is under consideration, just in time for Valentine’s Day! Details to follow, but to get a jump on the fun, I’ll be giving a treat to anyone who comes to the January meeting with at least one scrap of kid-print fabric (washed and at least 10” x 10”). So as you leave your house on the 10th with a potluck dish in one hand,
make sure you have something from your stash in the other.

Until then, best wishes to you for a wonderful holiday season and great start to 2007!

    Angela

Vice President's Report — Betsy Reed

We had 48 members attend the Nov. 8th meeting to see what Electric Quilt can do for us! Thanks to
everyone who renewed their membership at the meeting. If you haven't done it by now, you will
not be listed in the Membership Directory that is available (along with Membership cards, and your
guest pass) at the January meeting. Don't forget to pick them up when you sign in!

Guests at the November meeting were: Marion Roth, Ridgefield, CT, Connie Kopperman, Pearl
River, NY, and Bronwyn Morris, Ridgefield, CT.

Thanks again to the Pineapple Ladies, who are always so helpful to me in setting up for the meeting! January Pineapple Ladies are Peggy Giumarra and Dorothy Lawlor.

    General Meeting, January 10, 2007

Not sure what to have for dinner on January 10th….well then put on your best quilted garment, make up a dish and come to the Nutmeg Quilter’s Pot Luck Dinner Meeting!! Throughout the dinner you will be asked to walk down the “quilt walk” and
share the story behind your garment. Also the batik guild challenge will be displayed and judged. Come and see what our members have created from a fat quarter of batik material. Good food,
good company and tons of laughter is guaranteed at the next meeting in January. If you have any questions on what to bring or wear, please feel free to call Ellen Beeber

    Community Service:

Because 'tis the season for giving, I have given all the Community Service quilts out that we had. Habitat for Humanity expects to have two dedications before the end of the year, so one quilt was given to them (they had another
quilt already). The Women's Center got nine quilts--six lap quilts and three child-sized quilts. I don't know the names of all who made these quilts, but I thank you very much. However, and this is a big however, we now have no quilts left,
so if you need a project, please think of doing a Community Service quilt. I hope to see you at the next meeting, and also at the next Hands On meeting on Feb. 14.

At the last Guild meeting, several members took fabrics from our stash to turn into more quilts.
Thank you for taking some of the burden of carrying all that fabric from me. I also received some
suggestions about organizations that might need quilts in the future: Stamford Neo-Natal Unit can
use baby and child quilts; Family and Children's Aid; The Women's Center of Danbury; and Habitat for
Humanity are others. If other names come up, please contact me.

Horse Babies Draw Betsy Reed to Kentucky
    Guild Seeks New Vice President

As many of you know, our Vice President / Membership Chair Betsy Reed is a talented quilter, fabric dyer and dedicated officer of our guild. Some of us also know that her work life involves horses. At our most recent executive board meeting, we learned that Betsy’s exceptional skills and experience are taking her out of Connecticut starting in January. She has accepted a six-month assignment in Kentucky to help deliver thoroughbred foals.

We are immensely grateful to Betsy for the many ways in which she has served the guild, and we wish her all the best in this venture. While we also hope that her guild, our beautiful state and an (as yet to materialize) enticing job offer here will lure her back, we need an energetic guild member to take her place promoting the guild’s growth through the remainder of her term. (Elections for all board positions will be held again
    at our September 2007 meeting.)

Betsy has planned ahead, taking care of practical details that will help shorten the learning curve and ease the transition. Volunteer candidates or persons with nominations for the position of Vice President/Membership Chair should contact Angela Liptack . Please note that, according to the bylaws, “the Vice President shall succeed the
President and shall have all the powers and duties of the President in the absence of the President.” Candidates' names should be submitted by Friday, February 2nd, so that they can be considered at the board’s next meeting on Wednesday, February 14th.

Art Quilt Exhibit and Sale Aug/Sept 2007
Sponsored by Nutmeg Quilter’s Guild and JT Trading Corp

This quilt exhibit will be held at the White silo Farm, Sherman, CT. We hope this opportunity to exhibit your art quilts will get you interested in doing more or trying this type of quilt for the first time. Work will be accepted on a first come - first served basis. The entry cost is $5.00 per piece for members and $15.00 for non members.
All work must be for sale and a sales commission is paid to White Silo Farm. All work must be made for displaying on the wall and must be ready to hang. Work can be framed, on stretcher bars, or hung from a rod with hanging wire. Maximum size of work for this show is 24" x 24" or 96" around the perimeter. This is so we will have space for everyone. The final dates will be announced at the March meeting and in the newsletter.
If your work is not ready to hang it will not be displayed. The coordinators have the option to exempt a piece from this show if it does not meet the "Art Quilt" Tradition, or if it is damaged or dirty. This show will run for 3 weekends Fri, Sat, and Sun. We will need help during these days to have members help sit the show. We would also like an artist bio with picture from each member taking part.

    Nutmeg Quilter’s Guild Valentines Event

Contact our president Angela Liptack or a board member about the exciting family fun event to be hosted by our guild at Ridgefield Parks & Recreation on Saturday,
February 10th. We’ll be helping families with children to create simple fabric valentines. Details are still to be worked out, but the day is reserved —and help will be needed. Should be lots of fun too!

Missing a piece of your fine china? You left a small floral plate at the November meeting. Call Linda to arrange its return.

September Meeting Raffle winners (fabrics were fall, Halloween & Thanksgiving themed) were: Carolyn Gardner, Lois Scoffield, M.J. Fitzgibbons, Arlene Urbansky, Diana Larson, Eleanor Tropsa

November Meeting Raffle winners (fabrics were all Christmas themed) were: Peg Wildman, Pat Ruhanen, Angela Liptack, Ellen Beeber, Libby Kasimer, Sam Morissey.

Notes for January meeting: In addition to the food being the main event, there are several other changes to the meeting format that should be noted. There will not be a block-of-the-month or door raffle at this meeting. There will be show and tell, however, so bring those finished projects to show off.

Block-of-the-month: In an attempt to give you all extra time to make those blocks, the block of the month is going to be presented two months in advance in the newsletter. Thus the tulip block presented in this newsletter is for the March meeting. I am including only paper-piecing patterns in the newsletter and additional copies willbe available at the January meeting for you to pick up. And, if you would rather use templates, they will be available at the January meeting for you to pick up also.
